Vehicle registration connects a car to its owner. California requires you, by law, to get your car registered with Department of Motor Vehicles or DMV Licensed BPA.
When you renew your registration, you’ll receive a new sticker.
Based on California laws, you may be required to keep the registration card with you when operating your vehicle.
If you allow your registration to lapse or don’t register your car, you could face penalty fees and vehicle impoundment, so you don’t want to drop the ball on this.
Smog inspection are generally required a vehicle’s initial registration in California and once, every two years, thereafter. This inspection cycle will continue for as long as the vehicle is registered in California , But there are some exceptions:
- Gasoline-powered vehicle is a 1975 year model or older (This includes motorcycles and trailers.)
- Diesel-powered vehicle is a 1997 and older year model OR with a Gross Vehicle Weight of more than 14,000 pounds.
- Powered by natural gas and weighs more than 14,000 pounds.
- An electric vehicle.
- Gasoline-powered and less than eight model-years old.
