You will be required to renew your vehicle registration annually. The DMV will send you a renewal notice in advance of your registration expiration. This notice will list your renewal options which generally include: renewal in person, by mail, by phone, or online. You may also choose to renew your registration with REGGEX.

The DMV will send you a vehicle registration renewal notice prior to your vehicle’s registration expiration date with the following:

  • Your vehicle information.( License Plate , Last 5 VIN no )
  • Your license plate tag’s expiration date.
  • Registration renewal fees.
  • Late renewal penalty fee information.
  • Parking ticket late fees (if any).

California registration renewal require drivers to get a smog check to ensure emission equipment on cars keep running properly and have not been altered since the last inspection.

However, some vehicle are exempt from meeting smog requirements including:

  • Vehicles that are 1975 or older models that are powered by gasoline
  • Vehicles that are 1997 or older models that are diesel powered and have a Gross Vehicle Weight of 14,000 lbs. or more
  • Vehicles that are natural gas powered with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 14,000 lbs. or more
  • Electric vehicles
  • Motorcycles

Gasoline-powered, hybrids, and alternative-fuel vehicles that are 1976 and newer versions require a smog check. Yet, here are 2 exceptions to the norm:

  • EIGHT model-year and newer vehicles do not need a biennial (every other year) inspection
  • Four model-year and newer vehicles do not need a change-of-ownership inspection

If the DMV does not have your vehicle insurance information on file, they will require you to mail your insurance card or stop by the DMV office to drop off your insurance card.
